Is The Party Over? A study on the use of Sci-Hub by academics

Arianna Martinelli and Giulia Rossello (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa) will be the speakers of the seminar “Is The Party Over? Academic Values and Contract Breach, Survey Evidence on the Use of Sci-Hub”.

The event will take place in a blended format on Thursday 3rd March at 14. More information will be shared soon.

Abstract
The work of academic professionals has become increasingly managed, evaluated, and measured using techniques derived from profit organizations. Such changes potentially deteriorate academic values, implying a breach of the psychological contract intrinsic to the profession. Besides anecdotal evidence, it is unclear whether this breach might have triggered academic deviant workplace behaviours such as digital piracy. In this paper, we examine one specific type of digital piracy: the use of Sci-Hub to access scientific literature. The speakers ask whether perceived contract breaches (e.g. competitive pressure, stress, administrative obligations) help explain this type of deviant behaviour. Based on a representative sample of 2849 academics working in top institutions in 6 European countries, the speakers find that the use of Sci-Hub is affected by both the intensity and the severity of contract breaches experienced by scholars. Additionally, by decomposing the types of contract breaches, the speakers show that both academic-specific and general ones play a role. However, their relative magnitude changes depending on contextual and demographic characteristics.
